We have lots of plants growing in and around our playground out back! Last year we became involved in the Farm to Preschool Initiative, focusing on growing, using and eating fresh, local foods. Our theme for our growing last year was Growing a Rainbow. We successfully grew (and shared a little) RAINBOW of vegetables and herbs. Some growing tries were a bountiful success such as our eggplants and huge green beans; and some were discouraging, such as our peanuts, pumpkins, and squash which were eaten by the resident garden squirrel. (He has already gotten our PreK’s potatoes and the Preschoolers Sunflowers this year!) The children (Infants and Toddlers) have weekly “Digging with Denise” garden sessions, and DAILY watering and watching of the progress of our plants! Although it is still our goal to plant a rainbow…this year’s theme is the Curious Garden (from the book by Peter Brown) and we will try growing in a variety of containers and spaces, and sprouting plants to share. Our Preschoolers and Pre-Kindergarteners, along with our Summer Campers this year, planted, maintained and harvested vegetables at our (family run) Webb Park Garden plot.
